What Makes A Good Employee?

Light Industrial — Commercial Staffing — GL Staffing Services, Inc.

In the modern working world, employers are only looking for one kind of employee. Employers are looking to hire shining stars to fill the various roles of their business. If employees aren’t able to positively impact the business they work at, then business owners aren’t interested in hiring them. Now you may be asking – what makes an employee a shining star? What makes up a good employee? GL Staffing is here to give tips to both employers and employees regarding what makes a great employee.

One of the best things that employees can show their bosses is that they’re a hard worker with a great work ethic. Additionally, workers that are disciplined are highly preferred. Employers also want employees that can concisely follow directions but perform work independently when they must. And finally, employers are looking for team players that keep the best interest of the business at the forefront of what they do. Continue reading this post from the GL Staffing blog to learn what makes a good employee.

Be A Hardworking Employee

When businesses are looking to hire new employees, they don’t want somebody who’s going to slack off on the job. From the first day at work, employees should establish themselves as a hard worker. What makes a hard worker? Hard-working employees are the type of people that finish a task, and immediately ask their superior “what’s next?” This eagerness to continue working is a sought after quality in new hires across all industries. Maintaining this eagerness to work is how you remain a strong and valuable asset to a business. Employees that succeed are ones that give their all in everything they do.

Exhibit Your Discipline

Another thing that employers from all industries keep an eye out for is how disciplined a worker is. What does this mean exactly? A disciplined employee does their job without having to be monitored by their superior or boss every step of the way. Continuing to work while nobody is watching is another sought after feature that employers look for in new hires. Of course, this isn’t something that can be easily shown during the interview. But, make no mistake – veteran employers and business operators will be able to tell which new hires are slackers and which are disciplined employees within just a couple of weeks.

Follow Directions When Asked, Be Independent When Necessary

This is another critical aspect of what makes a good employee. It goes without saying – when your superior asks something of you at work, you do it. That’s a major part of being an employee. But another aspect of being a good employee that often goes overlooked is the ability to be independent. There are going to be some days at work where you aren’t directly tasked with anything.

So what do you do?

If you answered anything other than “find something productive to do” then you’ve got to rethink your priorities! As an employee, you want to be able to perform tasks that can better the business at all times. Unless directly asked by your superior to take the rest of the day off due to a lack of work, then find something that can better the business. Think of those important, yet medial tasks that are required of the business. Make yourself useful and get some work done independently. This will further cement yourself as a talented, experienced, and valued employee.

Be A Team Player For The Business

Business owners are looking for the employees that are able to contribute to the common good and best interests of the team and business. That means going the extra mile in a number of situations. For example, if somebody is not at work that day, picking up their slack if they had any pressing tasks to perform that day. Another example of being a team player could be staying after work hours to get an important task done. These are just a few basic examples that can be applied to almost any business. But keep in mind, each business is different. After being hired, you’ll quickly learn what it means to be a valuable employee and team player for that business.
